A not so close encounter

Today we will move a fair bit westward to see a place that was named Devil’s Tower. This already makes it interesting, doesn’t it? The name however is in fact a misinterpreted Native American name of a rock formation located in north eastern part of Wyoming. Speaking of Wyoming – it is called the Equality State. This is due to the state’s history in civil rights.

Back to the tower (or rock). Ok, first let me show you what we are talking about here:

Can you see the rock in the background? Well, although America has a lot of roads, the Devil’s tower is not Rome so not all roads lead there. If you want to see vast spaces and long (pretty) empty roads in the USA head to the mid western part of the country. Wyoming is the least populous state, with the area close to 100 000 square miles it has less inhabitants than the tiny state of Rhode Island (that has an area slightly larger than 1000 square miles).

The Devil’s Tower in Indian beliefs is actually a bear’s tower. Different tribes have different legends about the weird formation but a lot of share a common topic: the bear. So it can be a Bear’s Home, Bear’s Lodge, Bear’s Tipi etc. Each tribe has its own explanation on how the mysterious rock was founded. None of these beliefs include complex geological processes, they are rather based on some form of divine intervention.

Today the mountain is popular with climbers. The surrounding terrains has also and interesting geological composition.

Some of you may remember a post about searching for Ninja Turtles. This time I was looking for something else, something more….. alien. The atmosphere around the mountain hinted that surely there was some extraterrestrial activity there. I didn’t want to interfere with that and that is the reason why I don’t have any photos made from a short distance. Let the aliens do their alien research in peace.

If the above explanation doesn’t convince you watch the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind and see for yourselves. After watching it the title of this post will also become more clear.

In the next post we will stay in the out of this world areas as we will be visiting some moonlike landscapes.
